Constellations is a tragicomic two-hander about the infinite possibilities of love in the cosmos. A lonely beekeeper meets an astrophysicist at a party, sparking an unlikely bond – from there, knots are tied, threads undone; in the face of the inevitable, will they still have each other?

Two by Jim Cartwright is a darkly comic portrait of a small-town pub and its patrons. Fourteen characters share laughter, heartbreak, and secrets — all under the watchful eye of the Landlord and Landlady who have secrets of their own.

Almost-L*** is a surreal (tragi)comedy about heartbreak without a paper trail. When Rosalie’s application for emotional damages is denied, her romantic record is put on trial. Bureaucracy meets yearning in this absurd, intimate audit of almost-attachment.

Dear Diary, set in the early 2000s, explores the complexities of identity and connection through the individual perspectives of a group of friends. The play explores how unique insecurities and desires shape how we interpret and respond to events.

Barron Scriptwriting Competition

Funded by Guy Newsham, a St Andrews alum, the Barron is delighted to host the 3rd annual St Andrews Short Playwriting competition! This annual competition brings together both new and experienced playwrights to create 10-minute plays (around 10 pages). The winner will receive £250 and the top five finalists' scripts will be performed in the Barron! Whether you’re a seasoned scriptwriter or a fresh talent, this is your moment to shine.

To participate, please send your scripts to

barron@st-andrews.ac.uk by October 15th at 5pm. Finalists will be notified by October 20th via email.
