What is an independent Barron show?

An independent Barron show are shows that are performed in the Barron, but are funded and facillitated independently by the production team. The production team will be responsible for organising funding, rights, marketing, casting, auditions, callbacks and rehearsals.

The Barron charges for £1 per ticket sold.

How do you apply for a independent show slot?

To propose a show, you must complete a proposal form, wellbeing form and a risk assessment.

 

These must be emailed to the Barron Manager, Carrie (barron@st-andrews.ac.uk) by a specified deadline which will be announced in the future when applications are open.

Any matriculated students studying in the University of St Andrews can propose, each proposal must already have a director, producer and a technician or publicist.

Putting on shows is not the only way to get involved, help us ensure the survival of the Barron by joining our subcommittee! Every academic year, we have seven positions open for application. Applications often open the summer prior to the academic year so keep your eyes peeled for the next one!

How do you apply?

Applications often open around June before the start of the next academic year, and reopens again in September if positions are not filled. Any matriculated University of St Andrews student are allowed to apply.

Barron Manager and Operations Manager are both selected through interviews hosted by Mermaids, the University of St Andrews Performing Arts Fund in April. Deputy Barron Manager, Barron Technician, Barron Front of House, Barron Wellbeing and Barron Librarian are selected, through interviews, by the incoming Barron Manager.

Barron Manager

The relocation from the previous Barron site on North Street to the Byre Studio has resulted in various operational changes with regards to the day-to-day management of the venue, but it has also meant the building of new relationships with the Byre staff and the emergence of new possibilities for the use of the space.

 

The 2026-2027 Barron Manager will be responsible for continuing to consolidate those operational changes, build those relationships, and realise some of those possibilities. This will involve:

  • Overseeing the creative direction of the Barron Theatre by programming shows and events produced by Mermaids as well as by other student and community groups.

  • Organizing, advertising and overseeing independent Barron shows with the Barron Subcommittee.

  • Update contracts for using the Barron, to be signed by all Mermaids and independent shows and events. These contracts should include rules for using the Barron, agreement to treat the space and all Byre staff and Barron Subcommittee with respect, etc.

  • Lead Barron inductions for all teams using the space.

  • Leading on strategic planning in order to ensure we are making best use of the venue; this could include diversifying programming, increasing training opportunities, or investing in new resources.

  • Representing venue users’ interests in ongoing negotiations with the University; these currently concern asset storage, access to the venue, and workshop provision.

  • Liaising with the Byre staff on health and safety guidelines, operational issues, and audience development.

  • Leading the Barron Subcommittee to ensure that technical, marketing, and front of house operations all run smoothly.

  • Organizing and facilitating the 4th annual Barron Short Playwriting Competition in October/November 2026. Carrie will provide contact details for the sponsor.

 

Barron Manager is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in venue management and to shape a new era of student theatre in St Andrews. The ideal applicant will be highly organised, resourceful, and forward-thinking. They will need to have an in-depth understanding of the performing arts community in St Andrews, and be committed to maximising opportunities in student theatre.

Operations Manager
(via Mermaids)

The Operations Manager manages all rehearsal bookings for all Mermaids shows and Barron independent shows and events. You will be responsible for maintaining the Excel sheet with all available rehearsal spaces and when they are. Maintaining communication between production teams, the Student Union, University and the Byre are also crucial in ensuring there are no confusion. You will work under both Mermaids and the Barron subcommittee. Additionally, you are responsible to find fire marshals from both Mermaids and Barron committees for all Barron shows and events. It is the perfect role if you are good at time management, communications, managing spreadsheets and like working in a team.

Deputy Barron Manager

There are a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into running the Barron. Whether this is communicating with the Byre or ensuring production teams abide by all health and safety regulations and procedures.

The role of Deputy Barron Manager is to help productions teams in completing all necessary paperwork in order for their shows to run smoothly. If you like paperwork and are good at communicating, this might be the job for you!

Barron Technician

Tech plays a huge part in putting on a successful show anywhere. Tech is also one of the most inaccessable parts of theatre due to the amount of training it takes to learn the ropes on how to do it. 

​

As Barron Technician, your role will be to host workshops to make theatrical lighting and sound more accessable to the student population, while also helping out productions teams if they are unsure on how to use any tech in the Barron. A tech background is necessary for this role.

Front of House Manager

The Front of House Manager will be responsible for managing the Barron social media channels, for creating graphics for Barron-specific events. You will have significant freedom in creating graphics and establishing the branding of the Barron

​

The role also includes helping in the promotion and ticketing of Barron shows and events. Feel free to include any ideas or mockups in your application. A proficiency in Canva or Powerpoint is preferred for this position.

Barron Librarian

The Barron Librarian is responsible for maintaining and updating the Barron Library, a database of mainly student-written plays for everyone to read.

​

This is also a social role, you will have the freedom to devise and run any series fo workshops, informal play readings, or other social intiatives that has not been done before. Feel free to include ideas in your application.

Barron Wellbeing Officer

The Barron Wellbeing Officer is responsible for providing welbeing support to all Barron production teams, along with directing their questions and concerns to the correct personnel if they have any.

​

You will serve as the primary contact for any cast and crew who are experiencing conflicts within their teams and may feel more comfortable approaching an external individual for assistance.

​

The Wellbeing Officer will ideally check in with Barron production teams throughout the semester and report any extenuating conflicts to the Barron Manager. This role would be great for someone with strong interpersonal skills.
